*Warning- contains spoilers of the first book, Legend*

Prodigy the second in the Legend series by Marie Lu takes place in Vegas. The Elector Primo dies which leaves his Anden to take his place as leader. Day and June join a group of Patriot who offer to help Day rescue his brother and provide a passage to the Colonies however only if June and Day do something in return. Specifically, assassinate the new Elector. They agree but June, who tries to get close to Anden as part of their plan to murder him, begins to see that he is nothing like his father and could make a positive change. She battles with whether to help him or go through with the plan for Day’s sake as revolution by the Patriots may not be the right way to make the Republic a better place.

I enjoyed reading this book as it was fast-paced and exciting. However, I think that the first book was better. The problem is with a lot of dystopian series is that the first book gets you pumped and ready to read about a revolution but the second or third books don’t always live up to your expectations. I like that I got to learn more about Anden and find out that he’s not like his father or my first impression of him in the previous book. It was interesting to see how the characters changed from the first book. June became a lot more likable in this book as she was less arrogant and showed that she cared for others. Day, on the other hand, became more flat and less dynamic in comparison to the first book where he seemed like a more developed character. Tess changed A LOT since the first book. I was a bit surprised that she developed feelings for Day though as I always pictured her as his little sister. I think the whole part about her being jealous that Day is in love with June was a bit unnecessary as it felt like the author was trying to create almost a sort of love triangle. I really hope it doesn’t turn into that like about every other YA novel. I really liked the part where they reached the Colonies. It was really cool to see how different governments were run in the book and how different the Colonies were to the Republic. Also reading about the Patriot propaganda. After reading the first book I assumed that the Republic was one of the leading countries in the world but it was really shocking to see that wasn’t the case.

In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this book but it wasn’t as good as I though it was going to be. It was still a fun read but it could have had more action and although I’m glad it had a happy ending the way Day stopped the revolution and saved the day almost seemed too easy and rushed. I’m interested to see how things will turn out in Champion, the third and final novel in the series.
